  • Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s long-standing premier, a self-declared Jesus-like figure, drowned in scandals, has bid this world adieu at the age of 86.
  • The man was notorious for his indulgence in debauched ‘Bunga Bunga’ festivities, and despite the shadow of corruption, remained a dominant figure in Italian public life.
  • His influence extended beyond politics, as a trailblazer of commercial television in Italy, owner of AC Milan football club, and as Italy’s wealthiest individual for a spell of ten years.
  • In spite of a grim prognosis of leukaemia, Berlusconi’s political flame flickered till his last breath, serving as a senator and ally in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing administration.
  • Once upon a time, in the land of the boot, there lived a man named Silvio Berlusconi. A character larger than life itself, this self-made man was known for his flamboyant ways and his knack for stirring the pot. Much like our dear Tom Sawyer, who could charm the ants off an anthill, Berlusconi had an uncanny ability to woo the masses with his words. But alas, the similarities end there, for while our Tom was a mischievous lad, this Italian gent was embroiled in a whirlwind of scandals that would’ve made Injun Joe blush.

Drawing parallels to himself and the good Lord Jesus, Berlusconi strutted about the public stage like a peacock in full bloom. But his feathers were not all that pristine. His infamous ‘Bunga Bunga’ gatherings, teeming with young damsels, including the notorious ‘Ruby the Heart Stealer’, cast a long, scandalous shadow over his political career. It was a spectacle that could’ve given the Duke and the Dauphin a run for their money, had they been part of our time.

Berlusconi was not just a political figure, but a titan of industry too. Much like Hank Morgan, the Connecticut Yankee who revolutionized King Arthur’s court, Berlusconi transformed the face of Italian television. He owned the AC Milan football club, and for a good decade, he sat atop the Italian wealth pyramid. It would seem that he had a Midas touch, or perhaps a knack for jumping frogs, if you will.

Now, Berlusconi wasn’t a stranger to life’s harsh blows. He found himself grappling with the grim specter of leukaemia. But much like our Huck Finn, who never shied away from adversity, Berlusconi faced his trials head-on. Even in the twilight of his life, he remained politically active, serving as a senator and standing shoulder to shoulder with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her right-wing government.

In my humble estimation, this Berlusconi fellow, he lived a life of grand proportions. The scandals, the opulence, the power – it’s like something out of a dime novel. Not a pretty tale, mind you, but it sure does captivate the imagination. It’s a reminder that even in the highest echelons of society, human folly and frailty are ever-present. Reminds me of when I was a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi – you meet all sorts of characters, but at the end of the day, we’re all just people, warts and all.
